Wisdom Teeth

Which teeth can remain embedded? Wisdom teeth, canines and premolars can also remain embedded. When it is determined that they cannot be brought to their places orthodontically (with wires), they should be removed by jaw surgeons in the same way. When and when should impacted teeth be extracted? Wisdom teeth are the last teeth in the mouth. Since they are in an area that is difficult to reach and see, brushing and care can be more difficult than other teeth. Due to insufficient brushing, 20-year-old teeth easily decay, causing pain and bad breath. Wisdom teeth cannot come out in some cases due to the space shortage in the jaws. They can remain fully buried (not seen in the mouth under both the gum and jawbone), or they can become associated with the oral environment by remaining semi-buried under the gum. In this case, they cause an infection by causing food jams and accumulation in the area where they come out of the gum. This condition, which causes swelling and redness in the gums around the 20-year-old tooth, severe pain spreading to the neck and ear, swelling of the lymph nodes, mouth opening and swallowing, is called pericoronitis. Fully embedded 20-year-old teeth, on the other hand, can squeeze the teeth in front of them and create perplexity (curvature) in the teeth. In addition, they may cause decay of the neighboring tooth by putting pressure on the tooth. Embedded 20-year-old teeth, which have not been noticed for many years, can cause serious problems by causing cysts that reach large sizes in the jaw. Even if it does not cause any problems, 20-year-old teeth may need to be extracted for orthodontic treatment in order to align other teeth properly. For such reasons, 20-year-old teeth need to be extracted with local anesthesia only by anesthetizing the area where it is located. How should oral care and nutrition be after the impacted tooth operation? Spitting, tooth brushing, vigorous shaking, using straws or mouthwash should not be done on the first day after extraction. Warm, non-granulated and soft foods should be consumed in the first two days. After every food consumption and tooth brushing, antiseptic mouthwashes recommended by the doctor should be used. Pain medications and antibiotics, if recommended, should be used regularly. You should not smoke for the first 48 hours as it will disrupt the healing process. Will there be a lot of pain after impacted tooth extraction? After a quick and sufficient surgery, there is not much pain and the resulting pain can be easily controlled with mild painkillers. Will my face swell a lot after the impacted tooth operation? Edema in the cheek varies according to the condition of the tooth and from person to person. In order to prevent swelling, a cold compress (ice compress) should be applied to the cheek area for the first 24 hours. Slight swelling is normal and necessary for healing.
